Con Reports

On the Heyn's Hussies board, you can read a thread of everyone's favorite moments from the Con.

The following are various con reports contributed by folks who were able to attend.

First up is Domino's music review!

Having survived a second con I want to say thanks to everyone for making it special...hi to all my old friends from last year and the new folks I finally got to meet at this con. Wish I could have hung out more with you all..there were so many different activities going on.

As for the music.....very eclectic evening to say the least.

DON FRANCKS' GROUP
Don and his group were marvelous. An accomplished group of jazz musicians and a man that sings from the heart. You hear the threads of his multitude of experiences weave through the music. His open and easy banter with audience reaches out draws the crowd in for a glimpse. I especially liked a tune that was either at the end or near the end of his set. Wish I had caught the title but it was about the long journey back to a hard luck place called Chicken Row. It was so very cool to see Don perform music in this setting.

RHEA'S OBSESSION
Since Don had basically used Rhea's set-up there wasn't a long break between these two artists. Rhea's sound was set up by Morgan who is a darling young girl from Toronto area. Seems she is highly regarded as the best around town and she and their engineer (and I didn't catch his name) did an awesome job.

I just let the music envelope me...didn't take notes so I'm not certain of the entire set. I know that Sue dedicated a tune to the con music organizer Crim. Was it "When I Was In My Prime"? It was performed in perfect a cappella. Quite breath-taking. The energy and presence of this group is really wonderful. There's a combination of power and grace that is so unique it's difficult to define. The set did of course include "Death by Moonlight" and "Cun Lacoudhir" and both were performed magnificently. Sue's voice alternately soars, beseeches, imparts earthbound wisdom and an innocent mysticism. Sue looked wonderful and invited everyone to fill up the dance space in front of the stage. Once everyone was on their feet no one sat back down. Jim plays a myriad of stringed instruments with equal virtuosity as well as a range of exotic percussive instruments (bodhran, doumbek, tablas) by all the members of the group that deepens and enriches the sound.

I had already received copies in the mail of the limited cd "Eclipse" so I picked up a couple of copies of Projekt's 1999 Christmas cd "A Winter Story" (which has 2 tracks by Rhea's) and a few pieces of Sue's handmade jewelry for my boys g-friends, myself and a music pal in Ireland. Sue promised that the new cd "Between Earth and Sky" would be available on their new label Metropolis in 2000 and after a taste am anticipating it greatly. Sue and Jim are so great with their fans and so appreciative of the Nikita connection. Reading the liner notes on their "Eclipse" cd I noticed that under the heading "a few irreplaceable humans in the organism that is Rhea's Obsession" the NIKITA con occupies a spot on the list. How great is that ?

VIBROLUX
The last of the musical evening triple threat was Vibrolux. By the time Don first came on the evening was running an hour and half behind, it was around 1:00 a.m. when they first hit the stage to set up. I'd say only the truly dedicated music fans at the convention were treated to their kick-ass set, but those that love to rock and roll were treated to a really dynamic set. They played all of the tunes that have been featured on the show as well as another of my favs from their cd "Mind". Frontman-songwriter Steve promised a new cd in the start of the new year. The new tunes rock. He mentioned he'd already shot some new stuff over to the show (Blaine Johnson?) so perhaps we'll be treated in Season 4. As I said the room had really emptied out by the time this band started but everyone was on their feet dancing and the sheer energy of the music was drawing many others back into the room as the set progressed. I like this band a lot. My music roots are firmly planted in rock 'n' roll and they push all the right buttons. I hope they sold a ton of cd's and had a fun time watching the LFN fans havin' a ball.

Well...that's my wrap. I was busy much of the con helping out preparing for the charity auction so missed a lot of the activities but Saturday night was reserved for the music and it certainly more than made my trip.

Domino
